Background
Mulungushi University School of Education is particular about the way assessment and evaluation should be conducted at all levels of the education system. The University appreciates that assessment is not about giving tests, marking them and allocating grades. Assessment is far more than this. The University recognises the fact that assessment and evaluation are integral activities of the learning process because they encourage students’ learning. For this reason, matters of quality in teaching and integrity in assessment and evaluation receive priority.
In order to sensitise educators and to remind them about good practices in assessment and evaluation, the School of Education has designed this course for all educators from the classroom to the examination boards. This course is particularly important for every officer who handles examinations in schools, colleges, universities and examination boards. Other targets are officers who handle examinations at district and provincial levels.
Rationale
The programme will provide students with a fundamental understanding of the core assessment principles with regard to designing reliable, fair, valid assessment and it will also challenge them to infuse these core principles into designing new assessments that will have a greater positive impact on student learning and achievement.

The course aims to:
- Empower participants with the principles of assessment and learning.
- To equip students with skills to design and implement programme evaluation in Education in a professional manner.
- Provide participants with skills in test construction.
- Help participants improve on their assessment procedures.
- Assist students understand and appreciate the importance of integrity in handling public examinations.
Objectives
At the end of the program Learners should be able to:
- Develop assessments that are valid, reliable and appropriate for instructional decisions
- Administer, score and interpret results of externally produced and internally produced assessments
- Use assessment results in making decisions about individual students, planning instructions, developing curriculum, and school improvement
- Develop valid student grading procedures that use a variety of assessment results to students, parents, and teachers.
- Detect unethical, illegal, and inappropriate assessment methods and use of assessment results.
- Highlight procedures to be followed in handling public examinations

Entry requirements
Assessment and Evaluation Procedures is intended to provide specialized skills to teachers and professionals in educational institutions and examining boards.
Expected prior knowledge
COURSE DELIVERY.
The course will run for 3 months comprising intensive lectures, practical sessions and tutorial sessions.
QUALIFICATION
After successful completion of this course, candidates will be awarded a Mulungushi University certificate in Assessment and Evaluation Procedures.
